Once I got the few fundamental steps to improving on creativity and developing my own style, it was just a matter of time and practice.
I've also been drumming along to Rap God, by Eminem. Rather than just paying attention and building off the backbeat, I've decided to add and play according to the rhythm of his raps and lines, and add accents where appropriate.
I think that's really pushing me to develop more creativity and style because I'm no longer sticking to the traditional rules of drumming.
Check out this video where I'm gaining most of my inspiration:

Developing your Style and Creativity as a Drummer: Week 2 Reflection
Picking up from where we left off last, we discussed improving creativity by building off a simple backbeat. A backbeat, if you're unfamiliar, is the main rhythm to a song.
So over the last few weeks, I did exactly what I said what I was going to do, and that is pick a song and play along to it, starting from the basic backbeat and working my way up. The song I picked was New, by Daya. It is not by any chance my preferred genre of music but it worked for the purpose of me developing my creativity!
I'd say it went pretty well. I learned that it takes a lot of patience to develop an entirely new drum pattern based off of a very simple backbeat. But it does pay off! The longer you stick with practicing the same thing, the more you realize how different it can be if you put the time and effort into it.

Developing your Style and Creativity as a Drummer: Week 1 Reflection
I've spent the last week and a bit looking into videos on youtube of various drum instructors and musicians talking about how developing myself as a drummer and finding my style. The video that I learned the most from was by a company called Drumeo. I've been following them for a bit, and the host (not in the video) is Canadian! How nice!
The main thing I took from this video is that there isn't just one way to play the drums. Sure, there's the traditional "right hand keeping time" and "left hand on the snare"; But that isn't the only way to make percussion instruments fit with the music.
Now going back to my proposal where my first step was determining the type of music I like to play along with...
I think I've chosen rap or instrumental music because it allows for the most flexibility in terms of playing along on the drums. There is never just one way to interpret a song or a section of a song, which is what makes these genres of music fun to play along to.
Playing drums along to songs of these genres allows me to start from a basic backbeat, and work my way to something more complex and impressive by building off the foundation. This of course requires a lot of creativity and application of techniques such as rudiments and dynamics.
Doing the above step will eventually, in my opinion, hopefully lead to building creativity over time and practice. We'll see what the next few weeks of practice holds.
Stay tuned to find out!

Genius Hour Intro
Welcome! My name is Gabriel, but people usually call me Gabe. I usually have a tough time summarizing who I am and what my interests are, but if I were to put it in a picture, this is it!
If the Word Art wasn't a something that you fancy, here's a link to my Pinterest page! It might contain more information that was not on the word art above, or perhaps you'd be more familiar with Pinterest. I used a hyperlink here. Definitely a useful tool in making a neat paragraph and directing the reader's attention to what matters. Will use it in my Google classroom or in emails in the future!
One thing that most people do not know about me is that I'm kind of a drummer. A relatively decent one I'd say. Drumming is my passion. I've done it for over 13 years now.
You may not be familiar with what "good" drumming is, so here's a video of a drummer I look up to and learn a lot from. Enjoy!
This here is an embedded video. Also a very useful tool because it grabs the reader's attention straight on to the video, and it is definitely not a hassle searching for a new link or opening a new tab. I'd use it in my Google Classroom or in any website I create.
